Case study: Frankie Thorogood

Serial Entrepreneur

About me:

I ran a sportswear brand for ten years before exiting in 2021.
I love sports, business, and creativity.

I also love challenges and goals. I learned how to play the guitar in 30 hours, and to shuffle dance in 10 hours.

I’ve been very into mindfulness recently, and meditating every day for the past 2 years has changed my life.

THE CHALLENGE:

The key challenge I bought to Tomas was ‘FOBO’ (the fear of better option) also known as ‘maximising’.

I tended to always worry about choosing the very best option and leaving no stone unturned. I wanted to maximise and perfect every decision, from where to sit in a restaurant or what t-shirt to buy, to what candidate to hire.

The approach worked in some situations but was my default and caused me stress, indecision, anxiety and unhappiness on a regular basis. It was not serving me well.

THE GOAL:

My goal was to defeat my FOBO.

I also wanted to explore my life in general and touch on various topics as they become relevant.

I hoped to understand myself better, set and achieve clear goals and learn.

THE JOURNEY:

We started by tackling FOBO directly and discussed examples as they arose.

Tomas helped me understand some key principles around maximising and decision-making. I became consciously aware of my maximising as it happened and could begin to change my default response to a more appropriate one.

Very quickly, I felt I had started to change this habit that had been present for many years.

I loved my coaching sessions with Tomas. We would often chat about various topics of interest, and he shared many valuable principles and insights with me.

We also took focus on values, which I think can underpin a lot of how we choose to live our lives.

The Result:

I made a huge dent in my FOBO/Maximising habit very quickly.

I don’t find it dominating my life anymore, and is back to being a useful tool rather than an overwhelming and inhibitive habit.

I learned many valuable principles that I am working on building into my daily life and behaviours.

It was very useful to have a check-in, take a big-picture view of my life and have a thoughtful, intelligent review every two weeks.
